In the last two Word for Wednesdays, I talked about salvation from sin, unto good works, the fruit of righteousness. Now I want to talk about the life we have been saved unto. A recurring theme in my church lately has focused on the fact that the Spirit gives life, to our spirits and our bodies. It has been scientifically proven that your thoughts stimulate hormones which produce chemicals that literally effect your body for good or for bad! Negative thoughts break you down and make you susceptible to invading pathogens, but positive thoughts keep your body healthy. In fact, scientists have discovered that while 13% of diseases are caused by bad diet, the other 87% are caused by negative thoughts: anger, lust, fear, envy, unforgiveness, bitterness, etc. So the Bible was right after all!
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.” (2 Corinthians 1:4-6)
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63)
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:5-10)
…be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.” (Ephesians 5:18-21)

So the Spirit of God gives us life, in the body and the Spirit; he gives eternal life. I remember hearing Ray Comfort was preaching in the open air once; he was discussing death with an apparent atheist. At one point, the atheist said, “We are all going to die some time.” Ray responded, “Sir, speak for yourself; I’ve got everlasting life.” YES! That is it! We who are in Christ will never die; “He who believes in the Son HAS eternal life…” (John 3:36) Here is the life we have in Him:
For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:7-10, 14-21)
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:1-10)
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2)
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:16-25)
What an awesome God we serve! Some complain that God is an angry tyrant telling us how to think and how to live, but let me tell you now: His commandments are not burdensome; science proves that God’s principles are life to our flesh if we set our minds on them! He gives us the undeserved favor of eternal life, and a good life here in this temporary body! How worthy of our praise and thanksgiving is the Lord!

Like a thread in a very long piece of fabric, this message repeats itself again and again, doesn’t it? Some of the scriptures you mentioned are SO dear to my heart. He has saved us!!
“His own arm brought salvation for Him, and His own righteousness, it sustained Him! … He was clad with zeal as a cloak. Arise, sine; for your light has come!” Isaiah 59:16-60:1
The WFW posts are all kind of intermingled lately– His joy and His righteousness and His goodness are our strength– strength for living, strength for health and healing, strength to withstand the evil day. It’s just amazing!!
Great post!
Hi Alice,
Hey- my church has been talking about this same topic! What a coincidence! (Hee, hee!)
Anyways, excellent job combining those scriptures! They really put that topic in perspective. It’s also funny how science proves the Bible 100% correct. Too many people try to use science against the Bible (i.e. evolution). Recently, with the Memorization Marathon that we have been doing, I’ve been noticing a difference in my thinking! So, I think that the root of all spiritual problems is a lack of meditation and spending time with God, don’t you?
God bless,
Jay
What great, strengthening scriptures, Alice. Thanks for putting them together.
I’ve thought about the “positive/negative thoughts” thing several different times over the years. I don’t think the answer is denying there are bad things, as some Christians do. When something really difficult comes along, I’ve seen people who hold to this viewpoint completely lose their faith. I even know of a pastor whose wife died of cancer, and the church blamed the pastor for her death because he wasn’t thinking enough positive thoughts. Woah!
What I’ve come to believe is that our positive thoughts aren’t based on denying bad things, but are based on the power and faithfulness of God in our lives. I think these words of Paul illustrate it well.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. (2 Corinthians 4:7-10)
Thanks for a thought-provoking post.
