Word for Wednesday: Willing and Obedient

This meme was started by Jean at Yeah, Right… This is my very first post on this meme, so it is very exciting to me and I would like to share with you all a scripture that I wrote a short commentary on in my journal in June of 2008.

“Going on from there, He [Jesus] saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.” Matthew 4:21-22

Jesus called to two brothers to follow Him. They were quite well occupied at the time mending their nets, like fishermen do. It wasn’t like they had nothing to do, so they might as well follow this curious vagabond who for some unknown reason wanted them to follow Him. And they were in the boat with their father. Who knows? Maybe their father was elderly and feeble and couldn’t haul the nets in or row the boat well by himself. Maybe he had poor eyesight, and his sons were there to guide him. Were James and John the only sons of Zebedee? Had their family been struggling to make ends meet? Had they heard of or met this Jesus before? What did Zebedee think when his sons suddenly stopped their work to follow this stranger? Did he exchange a wondering look with them? Did he say anything? Did James and John ever return? As we read passages like this in Scripture, these questions fill our minds, and we cannot conclusively answer them. All God found necessary for us to know was that when the Son of God called, James and John followed immediately. The whole point of this passage as applies to us is that James and John, sons of Zebedee were both willing and obedient to the sacred call of the Messiah. How about you? Has God called you for something? Maybe something small or distasteful to you? Did He need to call you more than once? Today, in your basic duties of the day, take up your cross to follow Jesus, and keep your ears attuned to His voice, that you might be ready to drop everything to run to Him.

“Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23)

Excellent post! This is very encouraging, as I have been studying this very subject recently.

I have to laugh because we use the same WordPress theme. :) I also do Word for Wednesday.

I do not know if I could ever just drop what I was doing to follow someone. I am under the impression that they heard Jesus before. But who knows?

  4. Yeah, that would be a challenge to just drop what you’re doing, but as I said on Jay’s blog, I think it’s a humble act of obedience when we do follow the Lord in that way. Great post!

I’m sorry it took so long to get here. With all the new people the past couple weeks, I somehow lost track of you.

This is an EXCELLENT post! I believe, with the way things are going in our country, that the day is coming when NOT following Him instantaneously will have disastrous results. I think He’s trying to “tune our ears” right now so we can do that … AND so we won’t be misled by another voice.

Thanks so much for joining. I’m looking forward to your future posts.
